Have you ever heard the phrases, “You are what you eat?” or “Abs are made in the kitchen?” True story! Studies have shown that a lot of diseases we see today are a result of all the junk and processed foods we eat in our diets. The food choices we make have more of an effect on our bodies than we might realize. Below are 7 Ways to Improve Your Eating Habits and ideas on how to eat healthy foods!

Drink More Water

The human body is comprised of up to 60% of water and as a result, you need to take in a certain amount of water each day just to function properly. Studies have shown the amount of water you should consume each day depends on your weight. My rule of thumb is to drink half an ounce of water for each pound that you weigh. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds you should drink a minimum of 100-ounces per day.

Cut Out Soda

When I say cut out soda, this also includes diet soda! Regular sodas are high in sugar and calories. And while diet sodas are low in calories, they are high in artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners have been shown to affect metabolism making your body think it’s hungry, even when it’s not. This can lead to overeating, resulting in unwanted weight gain. Substitute Wheat for White

When we’re trying to learn how to eat healthy, and easy swap would be subbing out white rice, pasta, and bread for healthier options. You’re not cutting these items out of your diet completely, but choose options with whole grains or whole wheat, whenever possible. Walking down the bread aisle you will see so many options. Take a few minutes to read the labels. Look for bread that is high in fiber (at least 3g per serving) and that the first ingredient listed is “whole-wheat flour” (or another kind of whole grain). The more fiber a food has, the longer you’ll stay feeling full.

Everything in Moderation

Do you drink several cups of coffee each day? Try going down to only drinking one cup a day or even one a week. You can try doing the same thing with alcoholic beverages and sweets. Not only will moderation make these types of treats taste that much better, but you will look forward to having them.

Eat the Rainbow

How to Eat Healthy - 7 Ways to Improve Your Eating Habits - eat the rainbow - fruits and veggies

Adding more colors to your meals will help maintain better balance in your diet. Try colors like red, orange, yellow, green, and purple – just like the rainbow! “Eat your veggies!” is something you probably heard a lot growing up. And guess what? Your parents actually knew what they were talking about when they tried to teach you how to eat healthy foods. If you think it’s hard to eat all the servings of veggies your body needs in a day, try planning ahead or making a few healthy swaps! Opt for a spinach salad with fruit and grilled fish instead of a hamburger with fries. If you’re hungry between meals, grab a piece of fruit or some berries instead of chips.

Meal Planning

Meal planning is a great way to shop more efficiently, eat better, and gives you a chance to try some new healthier recipes. When you plan out your meals for the week ahead, you’ll feel more in control and find that you have more time and energy to cook healthy meals than you thought!
